Corporate Affairs Director (JN -012020-4102)

Our client is a company in the technology industry with over 12,000 employees around the world and they are currently looking for a Corporate Affairs Director in Managua, Nicaragua.

This role will be responsible for leading the company’s corporate affairs, legal and compliance teams. The role requires an experienced and proactive individual who will take the lead on legal and compliance issues and will effectively anticipate and mitigate risks while supporting the senior management team in achievement of business objectives. The role will focus on developing and executing the company’s corporate affairs strategy by constructively engaging with national and sub-national governments, regulatory bodies, press and media, public sector agencies, non-governmental organizations and related stakeholders with a view to ensuring public and regulatory frameworks that are conducive to a fair, level and successful operating environment for the company’s current and future business.

  • Lead and provide strategic direction to a team of subject matter experts in the areas of regulatory affairs, corporate responsibility, legal, compliance and communications
  • Manage the implementation and continuous development of the company’s external affairs strategy leveraging the team’s constituent functions so as best to support local business objectives
  • Provide strategic counsel on legal, business and operational matters to the GM and executive team; anticipate issues and estimate risks strategically, and identify proactive solutions that will eliminate or mitigate risks while permitting the achievement of the company’s business objectives
  • Ensure the representation of the company’s legal interests and provide assurance of strong corporate governance
  • Scope of responsibilities will include oversight of contracts and commercial agreements, finance, governance, real estate, intellectual property, employment and litigation/adversarial proceedings, through management of internal and external counsel.
  • Develop and manage the implementation of the company’s stakeholder engagement strategy in close coordination with the country GM and regional staff to achieve agreed objectives of the business which are influenced by government action
  • Monitor the regulatory, political and government relations landscape of the company’s for threats and opportunities to the business and communicate this intelligence to functional colleagues, the country GM and relevant senior management at global HQ and develop and execute strategies to counter threats and leverage opportunities identified
  • Develop and maintain relationships with officials at key government agencies and regulatory bodies (e.g., Ministries of Telecommunication, Labour, Finance, Education, Interior, the National Communications Agency, Central Bank, etc.) including education of these officials about the value of the business thereby improving the company’s overall reputation
  • Regularly communicate directly with lawmakers, government officials, regulators, and policy makers that may impact the business to safeguard and enhance the company’s reputation and competitive position
  • Recommend, engage and manage the company’s relationships with necessary third-party intermediaries including industry associations, broad-based and business trade associations, diplomatic missions, NGOs, civil society organizations, public relations and press agencies and media influencers – the latter in close coordination with communications and PR staff
  • Oversee the in-country implementation, and local development of the company’s corporate responsibility and social investment strategy that consists of both long-term management system implementation as well as managing and responding to a very dynamic risk environment
  • Oversee all of the company’s non-financial (corporate responsibility) reporting and materiality assessments for the country
  • Manage and implement the company’s communications strategy with regards to public messaging on any government, policy, regulatory and CSR related issues
  • Jointly with the country Compliance Officer, maintain that all interactions with government and regulatory agencies and officials strictly follows all policies and procedures and assist in maintaining that the company’s adheres to the highest possible ethical and compliance standards

Education / Training

  • Master’s or Doctorate in Law
  • Bachelor’s degree in Government, International Relations, Public Administration, Public Policy, Environmental policy, Environmental Science, and/or the Social Sciences is a strong advantage


  • +10-15 years practicing law; in-house legal management roles are a strong advantage
  • Strong understanding of regulatory, administrative, legislative and policy processes, including the Government’s budget process
  • Active network of senior government and non-government contacts in Nicaragua
  • Strong experience and familiarity with compliance principles, including international anti-corruption legislation
  • Strong understanding of regulatory, administrative, legislative and policy processes, including the Government’s budget process
  • Strong understanding of the media landscape and key influencers in it
  • Experience of managing effectively in a complex, politically sensitive environment
